Kong armchair

Philippe Starck

Starck first designed the Kong barstool for the Chinese restaurant Kong in Paris. The one armed stool was intended to make it easy and graceful for the super model clientele to slither in and out of the bar. Kong requires the hand welding of 24 separate pieces of aluminum, and an additional 8 hours of hand polishing.

The Kong chair started as a problem to solve. The wooden barstools at the long bar at the (Starck-designed) Sanderson hotel in London were breaking. With Starck's help, Emeco created an aluminum frame shaped very similarly to the wooden shape, which would stand up to heavy use. The Emeco chair at the Sanderson has a padded back with an eye printed on the pad, and is unmistakable.
Starck added tufted purple padded velvet seatbacks for use at the Taschen bookstore in Beverly Hills. The design was modified again for the final production version for the Kong restaurant in Paris and again for the glittery Baccarat showroom in Paris.

"Working with Emeco has allowed me to use a recycled material and transform it into something that never needs to be discarded - a tireless and unbreakable chair to use and enjoy for a lifetime. It is a chair you never own, you just use it for a while until it is the next persons turn. A great chair never should have to be recycled. This is good consideration of nature and man kind."
