Copper Shade

Tom Dixon

A light made using copper, a material more commonly associated with solar cells and microwave radiation. The Copper Shade is created by exploding a thin layer of pure metal onto the internal surface of a polycarbonate globe. The result is a highly reflective surface with a warm metallic glow.

Copper collection is formed using a technically advanced process of vacuum metallisation. The process involves vaporising a small amount of pure copper at a very high temperature and then sucking it on to a surface by applying an electrical charge. Extremely small holes can appear at times within the metal coating due to environmental conditions.

Material: Polycarbonate, copper.
