Kontur vase

This is the story of an experiment with paper that ended up on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. normann copenhagen presents Kontur, the unique vase designed by Mette Kargo Hvid. As part of her graduation project, Mette was sitting folding strips of paper, inspired by the ornamentation typical of textile craftsmanship.
Through her experimentation with paper, she created a pattern with strips of paper that formed a simple, flexible shape. She positioned the strips of paper on edge and regarded her work. This was how the idea for Kontur took shape. Taking inspiration from lace, Kontur has been created in the tension belt between traditional craftsmanship and modern form – designed in norm-transcending materials.

Mette Kargo Hvid explains: "Kontur springs from my background as a textile designer and represents the concept of a simple, flexible vase, inspired by the intricate ornamentation of lace. I find it interesting to apply my expertise in textiles in alternative ways – and at the same time reflect upon the multifaceted potential afforded by the old craftsmanship traditions. Kontur is designed in silicone rubber because this material, as well as being an alternative to ceramics, gives Kontur a surprisingly soft touch while imbuing it with a simple, informal character."

With its soft, flexible material, kontur surprises with a new experience everytime you use it. Kontur is the story of an experiment that culminated in a vase. It is a work of craftsmanship, made by hand and utilising certain unique characteristics that have been successfully reproduced in a process of industrial production. Kontur has been created in the tension belt between traditional craftsmanship and modern form.
Kontur is on display in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, Korea & Japan.
